Position: Climbing Gym Instructor

Are you an experienced climber with a passion for coaching and sharing your love of the sport? The Richmond Olympic Oval is seeking Climbing Gym Instructors to deliver progressive and engaging climbing lessons for participants of all ages and skill levels. In this instructional role, you’ll support athlete development through thoughtful coaching, build foundational skills for new climbers, and help foster a safe and welcoming climbing community.

 

Key Responsibilities:

    •  Deliver safe, progressive instruction for all climbing lessons and programs, in alignment with individual program goals and the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model.
    • Assess and track athlete abilities and progress; provide personalized coaching and feedback.
    • Implement diverse teaching techniques to support climbing skill development.
    • Teach climbing gym safety, including proper top rope and lead belaying practices.
    • Communicate with fellow instructors, Head Coach, and Head Route Setter to align on athlete progress and programming needs.
    • Follow all program policies and procedures including attendance, reporting, radio use, and incident response.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience

    • A minimum of 1 year (combined) instructional experience in artificial or outdoor climbing environments.
    • A minimum of season of experience in competition climbing.
    • Current First Aid and CPR-C/AED certification.
    • Personal climbing ability of V5 or higher.
    • Successful completion of a criminal record check.
    • Current ACMG Level 1 Climbing Gym Instructor certification or equivalent considered an asset.
    • Competitive climbing coaching experience is an asset.
    • Post-secondary education in sport, recreation, kinesiology, teaching, or coaching is an asset.

Compensation range:

Regular Groups: $21.10 - $27.32

Private or Special Groups: $24.84 - $65.83

*plus 12% in lieu of benefits (hourly rate is based on qualifications and experience)
