Department: Community Sport and Physical Literacy

Reports to: Sport Climbing Programmer

Position Type: Auxiliary (12-25 hours per week)

The Climbing Wall Centre Shift Lead at the Richmond Olympic Oval ensures safe, smooth, and member-focused operations of our climbing facility. Supporting the Sport Climbing Programmer, Head Coach, and Head Route Setter, you’ll lead and mentor staff, coordinate daily activities, and maintain high standards for safety and customer service. 

 

Key Responsibilities:

Operational Leadership: 

    • Coordinate daily climbing wall operations during assigned shifts. 
    • Serve as point of contact for facility operations in the absence of climbing management. 
    • Manage real-time staffing needs to ensure labor efficiency. 
    • Provide feedback and support to the Sport Climbing Programmer for staff schedules. 
    • Collect and update staff availabilities each season. 
    • Manage and facilitate seamless visitor flow during high volume periods. 
    • Support administrative tasks and maintain equipment inventory. 
    • Report on equipment or facility issues promptly 

Staff Support & Training:

    • Supervise wall attendants and ensure tasks are completed safely.
    • Assist with onboarding and training staff.
    • Provide mentorship and communicate procedure updates.
    • Assist coaching team and route setting operations. 

Safety & Risk Management: 

    • Ensure adherence to Oval safety policies and protocols. 
    • Conduct orientations, belay tests, and equipment inspections. 
    • Respond to first aid incidents and complete reports. 
    • Maintain a safe environment and emergency readiness. 

Member & Visitor Experience: 

    • Provide exceptional customer service. 
    • Orient first-time visitors and promote programs. 
    • Communicate schedules, events, and closures. 
    • Support member engagement initiatives. 

 

Qualifications:

    • Strong knowledge of climbing systems, safety and belay technique. 
    • Experience as a wall attendant or in climbing operations 
    • Strong communication and leadership skills 
    • Ability to take initiative and manage responsibilities independently 
    • Excellent customer service abilities 
    • Valid First Aid & CPR 
    • NCCP Safe Sport and Rules of two, Commit to Kids certification 
    • Proficiency with Microsoft 365 is an asset 
    • ACMG CGI is an asset 
    • Coaching or route setting experience is an asset 
    • Successful completion of a Criminal Record Check

 

Compensation range: $24.61-$27.32 per hour plus 12% in lieu of benefits (hourly rate is based on qualifications and experience)

Employment Type: Auxiliary (12-25 hours per week)

Shifts vary but may include Monday to Friday between 3:00pm – 11:00pm and Saturday to Sunday between 8:00am – 9:00pm
