Head Coach & Competition Coordinator, Speed Skating

Are you passionate about developing athletes and growing high-performance speed skating programs? The Richmond Olympic Oval is looking for a dedicated Head Coach and Competition Coordinator to lead our Short Track Speed Skating Performance Program (SSPP) and oversee year-round programming. This role plays a key part in the provincial high-performance pathway, providing a world-class daily training environment and fostering the next generation of elite skaters.

 

Key Responsibilities:

    • Coaching & Athlete Development: Lead on-ice and off-ice coaching for the SSPP, creating annual training plans aligned with athlete development stages (LTAD model).
    • Performance Monitoring: Track athlete progress, provide feedback, and adjust training plans to optimize development.
    • Competition Support: Prepare athletes for local, provincial, and national competitions, including race strategy, preparation, and post-event analysis.
    • Pathway Development: Support athletes in their transition to Speed Skating Canada’s national development and high-performance training centers.
    • Interdisciplinary Collaboration: Work alongside strength and conditioning coaches, dietitians, and sport science practitioners to provide a holistic training environment.
    • Scheduling & Ice Time Management: Coordinate ice scheduling with High Performance Coordinators to meet training demands.
    • Competition Coordination: Oversee short track speed skating events at the Oval, liaising with officials and ensuring compliance with Speed Skating Canada (SSC) regulations.
    • Provincial & National Engagement: Collaborate with Speed Skating BC (SSBC) and SSC to align programming and host training camps and competitions.
    • Community Engagement & Outreach: Foster relationships with speed skating clubs, act as an ambassador for the Oval, and engage in outreach initiatives.
    • Summer Camps & Development Initiatives: Plan and deliver summer training camps and presentations for athletes, parents, and sport partners.
    • Staff Leadership & Development: Recruit, train, and onboard coaching staff, ensuring appropriate coverage for training sessions and events.
    • Financial & Program Management: Assist in budget preparation, monitor program revenue and expenses, and contribute to program reporting.
    • Marketing & Communications: Work with the marketing team to develop speed skating promotional initiatives.
    • Other Duties: Perform additional responsibilities as required to support the success of the Oval’s speed skating programs.

 

Qualifications 

Education and Experience:

    • A university degree in kinesiology, coaching, physical education, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
    • Minimum Comp-Dev NCCP Certified or equivalent.
    • 3+ years of coaching experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
    • Demonstrated experience coordinating complex sport programs, including development, planning, and implementation with stakeholder groups.
    • Demonstrated experience in supervision, including hiring, training, and performance management, is an asset.
    • Strong understanding of the Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) model.
    • Strong computer skills, including experience with program registration software and intermediate to advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and PowerPoint.
    • Standard First Aid and CPR certification required.
    • Safe Sport certifications, including Respect in Sport, Making Ethical Decisions, Rule of Two, and Concussion Training.
    • English required; skills in Mandarin, Korean, or French are considered assets, as is certification as an NCCP Learning Facilitator.
    • Must successfully complete a criminal record check.

    • Strong interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with athletes, parents, sport partners, and the broader speed skating community.
    • Ability to build and sustain relationships with key stakeholders.
    • Proactive and adaptable, with strong initiative and problem-solving skills.
    • Strong organizational and administrative skills, with attention to detail.
    • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team in a dynamic environment.
    • Must be available to work evenings and weekends as required.

 

Salary and Benefits: $55,278 - $72,847 (dependent on experience and qualifications).
