Position Title: Sport Instructor, Speed Skating (Short Track)

As a Sport Instructor, Speed Skating (Short Track) at the Richmond Oval, you will be responsible for assisting with on-ice program delivery for Neo Junior and Junior speed skating athletes who are following the High Performance Competitive Stream. The objective of this role is to provide opportunities and incentives for promising instructors/coaches in the lower mainland to work with High Performance Competitive Stream athletes and a knowledgeable coaching staff. Your role involves refining technical skills, and fostering a healthy, holistic team culture among the athletes. You will work closely with the coaching staff and the OvalHP speed skating team to analyze performance, provide constructive feedback, and implement effective coaching methodologies to elevate their sport specific skills.

We are looking for individuals with a passion for speed skating and experience coaching competitive stream athletes at the club level in a way that is in line with Speed Skating Canada’s standards and curriculum.  This position involves assisting the Head Coach with delivery of on-ice speed skating programs for athletes between the ages of 13 to 18.  This position provides growth and coaching development opportunities for instructors/coaches who are CompDev coach certified or who are actively working towards CompDev certification.  

Job Summary and Examples of Work: 

  • Provides coaching to ensure that participants are learning and performing in a safe environment as per safe sport standards.
  • Responsible for following and providing technical support during on ice sessions led by Head Coach or Assistant Head Coach. In some instances, this position may be asked to lead a session under the guidance of the Head Coach.
  • Demonstrates clear communication techniques to participants in a professional manner.  
  • Provides first aid to participants that are injured during programs.
  • Provides feedback to participants during on ice programs.
  • Provides conflict resolution and enforces program rules pertaining to safety.
  • Ensure participants are engaged by creating progressive instruction, skill-building, and educational experience during lessons through games and drills that are safe and level appropriate.  

Qualifications:  

  • Successful completion of Grade 12
  • NCCP Development Coach Certified (level 1) or higher
  • Fundamentals Coaching Certification is required
  • CompDev certification is considered an asset
  • Proven experience in providing speed skating instruction at the highest club level.
  • Experience working with youth.
  • Must have a background and knowledge in speed skating and sport instruction.
  • Valid First Aid and CPR-C/AED certificates

Compensation:   

$20.29 -$26.27, plus 12% in lieu of benefits (hourly rate is based on qualifications and experience)  

 

Schedule: 1 shift per week with opportunity to increase over time. Expectation to commit to four 1.5-2 hour meetings throughout the season.
