Olympic Experience Volunteer Opportunity

Program Overview

The Olympic Experience Volunteer Program presents an exciting and enriching volunteer opportunity for community and sport enthusiasts. Volunteers are exhibit guides and storytellers, facilitating conversations and leading activities with guests.  They relay, in an exciting and meaningful way, the rich history of sport in Richmond and the inspiring story of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

What is the Richmond Olympic Experience (ROX)?

The ROX is the first Olympic Museum in North America. A highly interactive and dynamic visitor experience, the ROX features interactive media, hands-on sporting simulations and displays – all of which provide the visitor with the experience of what it’s like to become an Olympian or Paralympian.


Job Summary:

 Delivering an excellent guest experience and maintaining a high level of customer service to guests of the museum and the Oval

  1. Customer Service:  Maintains a high level of customer service to guests of the museum and the Oval.
  2. Teamwork: Ability to build positive relationships with other volunteers and staff.
  3. Safety: Must be able to enforce safety policies for visitor safety. 
  4. Communication:  Strong communication skills (for example, communicating with teammates and or staff if there are any issues). 

Examples of work include: 

  • Sharing your Olympic/Paralympic enthusiasm with guests
  • Facilitating operations of simulators and the theatre, acting as hosts
  • Proactively responding to and approaching guests who need assistance and providing a high level of responsiveness to guest inquiries
  • Performing guided tours
  • Interacting with guests in a positive and friendly manner
  • Assisting visitors with the operation of interactive displays and simulators.
  • Skillfully managing a diversity of guests under a variety of circumstances
  • Being comfortable speaking and presenting information to groups of people with diverse backgrounds, interests and needs
  • Other duties related to the effective operation of the ROX and as assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator

  • Ability to remain calm in difficult situations
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to accept supervision and take direction
  • Ability to deliver feedback constructively and in a solutions-focused manner
  • Self-motivated, capable of identifying needs and taking independent action
  • A sense of teamwork; creating an atmosphere of inclusiveness for and valuing all team members
  • Ability to be open to feedback. Volunteers may have periodic performance reviews
  • Flexibility – understanding that museum traffic can be busy or slow depending on the day

Qualifications:

  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Be comfortable communicating in English. Additional languages an asset
  • Be comfortable moving around the museum during a 4-hour shift
  • Demonstrated ability to carry out duties with minimal supervision. This role requires a high level of responsibility regarding customer care, safety enforcement, and teamwork. Applicants must demonstrate an ability to manage their own scheduling and communication throughout the volunteering process. 

Time commitment

  • Minimum one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum commitment of 100 hours (approximately six months)
  • Attendance and active participation at 1-3 team meetings throughout the year
  • Occasional evening shifts available

Current shift availability

Shift availabilities are subject to sudden change. In order to secure your preferred shift, applicants should submit their reference checks and police information checks as soon as possible. Please also complete your interview and training as soon as possible. You will be invited to choose a shift once these have been completed.

Volunteers must successfully pass all of the following steps in order to be accepted into the program:

  • Complete the online application
  • Submit a resume (optional)
  • Complete a successful interview
  • Complete a successful Police Information Check
  • Complete two successful reference checks
  • Successfully pass training (Customer Service training and Olympic Experience training)
