Oval Ambassador Volunteer

Program Overview

The Olympic Experience Volunteer Program presents an exciting and enriching volunteer opportunity for community and sport enthusiasts. 

Volunteer Ambassadors lead tours for visiting groups at the Oval and provide in-depth information on areas of historical, cultural, and architectural interest.

What is the Richmond Olympic Experience (ROX)?

The ROX is the first Olympic Museum in North America. A highly interactive and dynamic visitor experience, the ROX features interactive media, hands-on sporting simulations and displays – all of which provide the visitor with the experience of what it’s like to become an Olympian or Paralympian.


Qualifications

  • Experience with group facilitation, leadership, and presentations
  • Ability to retain large volumes of information, trivia, and facts
  • Ability to present information in an enthusiastic and exciting way
  • Ability to create an inclusive and welcoming environment for guests of different backgrounds
  • Ability to adapt to the needs of guests
  • Be at least 15 years of age
  • Be comfortable communicating in English. Additional languages an asset.
  • Ability to physically lead guests throughout the Oval building

Expectations

  • Being enthusiastic and friendly – ready to deliver a WOW experience for guests
  • A positive attitude and willingness to help out as asked
  • Ability to adapt to the changing needs of the ROX and the Oval
  • Reliable and punctual
  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to accept supervision and take direction
  • Ability to deliver feedback constructively and in a solutions-focused manner
  • Self-motivated, capable of identifying needs and taking independent action
  • Ability to be open to feedback. Volunteers may have periodic performance reviews
  • Ability to uphold Oval policies and procedures

Time commitment

  • Minimum one shift per month, and good communication in case of any changes
  • Flexible schedule required – tours can happen at any point of the week. Need at least one open weekend and one open weekday
  • Each tour is 1 hour
  • Attendance at Volunteer Ambassador meetings (1-2 per year)

  • Submit a resume (optional)
  • Complete a successful interview
  • Complete a successful Police Information Check
  • Complete two successful reference checks
  • Successfully complete training (see below for more details)

Training:

  • Read, memorize, and practice the Ambassador script at home
  • Attend orientation on Oval policy and procedures
  • Shadow experienced Ambassadors on five Ambassador tours
  • After shadowing five tours, new Ambassadors may deliver tours under the supervision of an experienced Ambassador until the new Ambassador feels comfortable presenting tours alone
