Education ROX Volunteer

Program Overview

The Olympic Experience Volunteer Program presents an exciting and enriching volunteer opportunity for community and sport enthusiasts. 

The Education ROX program delivers inspirational experiences to school age children and youth in support of school curricula across themes such as the human body and health, science and technology, art and creativity, and leadership.

Education ROX volunteers are exhibit guides and storytellers who encourage and facilitate critical thinking by helping students to explore the inspiring story of the Olympic and Paralympic Games.

What is the Richmond Olympic Experience (ROX)?

The ROX is the first Olympic Museum in North America. A highly interactive and dynamic visitor experience, the ROX features interactive media, hands-on sporting simulations and displays – all of which provide the visitor with the experience of what it’s like to become an Olympian or Paralympian.


Job Summary:

Delivering an enriching learning experience for primary and secondary school students

  • Leading the Education ROX program
  • Creating an environment for fun and positive learning experiences
  • Teaching to the educational needs and abilities of individual students
  • Ability to “lead from behind” by motivating and empowering children to learn via their own discovery
  • Creating a memorable learning experience by sharing your Olympic/Paralympic enthusiasm
  • Assisting students with the operation of interactive displays and simulators.
  • Other related duties as assigned by the Volunteer Coordinator

Expectations:

  • Building trusting relationships with other volunteers and staff
  • Communicating with the Volunteer Coordinator to ensure strong communication and encourage information sharing

Qualifications:

  • Experience working with children and/or strong facilitation experience
  • Having strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to understand and empathize with different points of view
  • Ability to work with supervision (being open to feedback and to different points of view)
  • Ability to remain calm in all situations, especially those involving children

Requirements:

  • Be comfortable communicating in English.
  • Be physically capable of working the 4-hour shift
  • Be able to complete a successful interview, reference check, and Police Information Check

Time commitment

  • A weekly Wednesday OR Friday morning shift (9:45-1:30pm)
  • Required to attend initial and refresher training
  • Occasional training sessions and meetings (1-2 per year)
